It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the Sustainable Procurement, Environment and Social Standards Enhancement Centre of Excellence (SPESSECE), University of Benin. This World Bank supported project is one of its kinds in just six (6) Universities in the entire nation at present.
The SPESSE project at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) is a response by the National Universities Commision (NUC) and World Bank (WB) to the demands of Nigeria due to the myriad of developmental challenges confronting her in relation to procurement, environmental and social standards.

Hence, the Centre envisages being the leading regional hub for training, research and service delivery in these areas through the instrumentality of our comprehensive, high-quality, and well structured Short/Executive Courses, Advance Certificate Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes.

The project is impact driven and generally geared towards improving institutional governance and training through innovative and transformational teaching approaches integrated with practical learning sessions; providing educational delivery, pedagogy and in-service capacity building for personnel responsible for procurement, environmental and social standards; promoting diverse learning experiences through national and regional internship opportunities; and promoting collaboration with professional organisations, governmental sectors/agents and responsible private organisations.

Its research base which is both participatory and collaborative applies the Triple Helix approach that links University research to industry and the government and is oriented towards meeting developmental challenges in the three domains. Specifically, it aims at improving the equitable use of the country’s human and material resources for the attainment of social development and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Programmes under the SPESSECE, UNIBEN, include Short/Executive Courses, Certificate Courses, Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s degree programmes in the three domains. These are sustained by high-quality infrastructural development, curricular co-development, and comprehensive programme assessment initiatives that promote students’ learning and programme efficiency.
